Description
Accessible, reliable, and affordable energy is vital for human and economic development in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in improving livelihoods and opportunities. Renewables are crucial and offer substantial socio-economic benefits, addressing energy access gaps while enhancing climate resilience.
While greater investment in renewables is essential, enabling environment for private investors could trigger a range of risks for the host communities. The most promising sites for large-scale solar and wind projects in Sub-Saharan Africa are often in rural areas. However, their land-intensive requirement increases competition for land, impacting local livelihoods already vulnerable to climate change.
The webinar highlights findings from IRENA’s report titled ‘A just energy transition for communities: Large-scale wind and solar projects in Sub-Saharan Africa’. The report analyses several specific large-scale wind and solar projects in Sub-Saharan Africa, exploring potential inherent community benefits. It covers project siting, ownership structures, investments in community development, skill development, employment opportunities, local procurement, and community energy and gender.
